BY 1622 Spain had devel�oped a monopoly on New World trade that had far-reaching social and economic effects. Building, fitting, and supplying the fleets was big business. From such a grand enterprise, Spain was deter�mined to keep at hand as much of the profits as possible. As In�dian slaves toiled in the mines of the rich New World, crafts�men and laborers under con�tract to the Casa de Contrac�tion (House of Trade) kept the flow of goods and supplies mov�ing at a rapid pace.

IN THE EARLY YEARS when I first became interested in treasure hunting, there were several books out on the market allegedly giving the precise locations of hundreds of ships�all naturally carrying millions in gold, silver and precious stones. While they made interesting reading, providing you like fiction, I soon found that they contained virtually no authentic in formation On the locations of shipwrecks and were more of a nuisance than a help, because most of the shipwrecks were the inventions of the imaginative minds of the authors. To me, this made treasure hunting an even greater challenge and I started off on my own, without the aid of these phony books, and subsequently my quest resulted in the greatest treasure recovery in modern times.

Of the ships in Ubilla�s New Spain armada:

The CAPITANA, a 50-gun frigate at the head of the line, struck the coast about two and a half miles south of Sebastian Inlet where three reefs parallel to the beach extend 8oo feet into the sea.

She broke her bottom on the seaward edge of the outermost reef, spilling ballast and heavy cargo onto the coral and the sand floor 30 feet below. The lightened hull was carried in over the reef by surging mountains of water, then across the middle coral harrier into a sand trough less than 1oo feet wide separating the two innermost reefs. Here it disintegrated. Most of the cannons and lading spilled out onto the sand, Only 15 feet deep and 300 feet from shore. A trail of gold, silver and jewelry stretched inshore for 700 feet across coral and sand from the ballast. General Ubilla and 225 of his crew were killed.
